PT Friday

Every Friday Ailyn has two physical therapy sessions. She is loving the PT at the Children's Hospital. I think she likes being around so many people. She loves the attention she gets there. Her PT works her very hard over a hour. No word on the AFO's (ankle braces). We are waiting for paperwork to go through.

** I took that bottle away right way...no spraying was going to happen today**

Next is PT at our house with Miss Stacey. We have had Stacey come since Ailyn was 4 months old. All our therapists have become family. They are in our home once and sometimes twice weekly. They are Ailyn's best friends. Stacey works Ailyn hard as well. Since we are home for this session, Ailyn will often turn to jello when asked to "walk". We have to get creative to keep her mind on the session. Having PT twice has really worked out for the best. Ailyn is all stretched out and seems to do much better with her gross motor.

Our day got even busier when I got a call that her glasses came in (after 2 days!). When she first put on her glasses, she looked around and smiled. Looked at herself in the mirror and clapped. I got all teary. I could tell she could see better. I can recall the day I drove home with my glasses on. Everything was so vivid. I cried knowing that was the feeling Ailyn was having.

When we got home I sat her in her chair and took out books. She kept the glasses on for a full 10 minutes. She looked at books and smiled. She would look up at me and smile. I could tell the room looked different to her. Just watching her look around, then back at me was so neat. My heart melted! The rest of the night we put them on a few more times. We are going to make it a very positive experience for her. If we tell her NOT to take them off....she will know that will get us mad and she will do it (over and over). I have to be one step ahead of her.

Ailyn's vision therapist will be coming over to help out. Ailyn is stubborn. This will not be easy to keep them on. I told myself I am not going to stress over this. If we get her to wear them for 10 minutes a day....good. We will work our way up as slowly as need be.

But, how adorable does she look????

Updates and Ailyn facts

Our weeks have been so busy. Ailyn's schedule is packed with school, gym class, therapy and doctor appointments. Camden is busy with karate 3-4 times a week and well.... I just go along. I do find time to go on girls night out or a Target run alone. Going away for a weekend has been our savor. Our past trip was to a old fishing town. One of our favorite places to go. It's quiet and very relaxed down there. It's only 3 hours away but it feels like you are much further.

Ailyn has had many new appointments with lots of new updates. The second opinion at a new eye doctor went great. We really like this new doctor and switched over to him. He wants Ailyn to wear glasses for 2 months and come back late October. Then we will start eye drops to blur the good eye and make the weak eye work harder. We have not bought the glasses yet. I have a lot of anxiety about these glasses. Ailyn WILL rip them off her face every second. Even if she can see better. Her vision therapist is going to help with keeping her glasses on. I wished her lots of luck and hope that she doesn't want to quit her job after. I have been to the eye doctor to try glasses on and OMG she looks adorable!

Since Ailyn wasn't walking at 2. I decided to get her more PT through the local pediatric hospital. We have had 2 sessions so far. Ailyn will be fitted for AFO's (ankle braces) as soon as the doctor writes the script and insurance goes through. Her balance has always been way off. She struggles to pull to a stand still. I had thought it might have been her eye sight.... then I thought it might be the fluid in her ears. Even after ear tubes, her balance is off. We have always noticed Ailyn's feet leaning in when she stands. Her PT's said that most likely that would resolve itself when she walked. But, since she has been cruising for a year with no progress on walking..... it's time for braces. Ailyn does not have Cerebral Palsy. She might be able to be classified as having CP for insurance purposes but it wouldn't be your classic CP. It's more the Spastic CP.  We want her casted for the braces today! I think this will do Ailyn a lot of good with stability.

Ailyn has started to see a behavioral therapist at the Children's hospital. We have only been once but I really like it. It has already taught me how to deal with Ailyn's behavior. My days are very long. Ailyn will wear you out. She gets in trouble every minute of the day. She will scratch, pinch, hit, bite or pull your hair. She is not being mean. She is smiling when she does it ;) Most likely and hopefully it all has to do with no communication skills. The therapist was very impressed with Ailyn. She said she is a very bright child. Ailyn learned the sign for cracker in 5 minutes and has used it since. She knows what she is doing....she knows she is being naughty.....she thinks she is so so funny when she throws the cat food all over the kitchen floor or sprays her Pediasure all over the house. She loves any attention. She looks for me to get mad and say "NO". I ignore the bad behaviors and pretend I could care less. Inside I am counting down the hours until Daddy comes home so I can hide in a hole and scream. I can go on and on about her behaviors but I would need to drink a few glasses of wine to get through it.

Speaking of behavior. Ailyn's developmental pediatrician said Ailyn is showing ALL the signs for ADHD. She had said this before at her 1 year visit so it wasn't a shock. The doctor said she is "a very big handful and makes me tired just watching her". I was actually happy to hear that statement! It made me feel like I wasn't going crazy and that my child is really a handful! Ailyn's attention span is much less that what a average 2 year old should be. She can not focus on a task without flipping out and wanting to move onto something else. As you can imagine this makes her therapists jobs very hard. They are prepared each week with many toys and games to switch to every 2 seconds. Ailyn can sit and play dolls and she does focus on what SHE likes to do. Medicine is an option at 3 years old. I was against ADD meds for Camden at 4 1/2 but I really believe Ailyn may need something to calm her down so she can focus and learn a task. I am sure many will question a diagnoses of ADHD at 2 years old. I challenge you to a day with Ailyn to change your mind ;)

Ailyn started a Two & You class with me. I did the class with Camden and loved it. It was great to be back at the school. They were all so supportive when Ailyn was in the NICU. They all love seeing Ailyn "all grown up" and starting school! I have to admit, I was so worried about this class. I was worried she was too far behind. I was worried she would beat her classmates up. But, I have changed my way of thinking and am SO happy I didn't back out. She is doing great. She keeps up with her class of boys! She plays well, shares sometimes, paints one stroke on a paper, sits and semi listens to a book, LOVES snack time and the playground. I think this class will be so good for her. And, her teacher, Miss Sally is awesome!

Even after being the trouble maker she is, Ailyn can be so sweet too! And, funny! She loves to make you laugh. She loves to hold the guinea pigs and is actually very gentle with them. Her brother is still the funniest ever. Her face lights up when we pull up to the school to pick him up. She makes up for trouble with kisses and hugs.

Ailyn knows about 9 signs and 8 words. She doesn't label anything yet but knows what everything is. She follows directions very well. She tries hard to communicate. She gets very excited when you answer one of her signs or understand what she asked.

Ailyn will NOT keep shoes on.....don't even try. She will take them off every time you turn around. She thinks she is very funny when she throws the shoe.

When you count 1,2,3 to get her to stop doing what she is doing.... she will stop what she is doing and hold up her fingers and count along.

She loves the deer that are outside our house a lot of the day. She knows the sign for "deer" and will crawl to the door to watch them. She wants to hold every animal she sees. At the pet store she got upset that I told her she couldn't hold the mice.

Ailyn could care less about TV, never has watched 2 minutes of a show. But, when ICarly's theme song comes on, she will look up at the TV and dance. She will make sure I know it's on so I sing along to it.

The poor cat. Rage is 15 years old. He can't jump to get his food. Ailyn will hunt his food bowl down. If it's the dry food, she will take a few bites and throw the whole bowl across the kitchen floor. I step on morsels all day long. Do you know ants love cat food?? Camden caught her eating wet food the other day......just like her Auntie Bridget. I texted Bridget and she said she was proud ;)

If she gets a hold of your cell phone she will throw it as far as she can.... or if you are her babysitter, she will chuck it off the dock...... yeah, we have to buy the sitter a new phone.

It's never a dull day at my house.

First time fishing

We were sitting on the couch bored out of our minds. Ailyn had woke up with a fever so we knew we couldn't go anywhere too crazy. We decided to go to one of our favorite spots nearby and take Camden fishing for the first time.

Daddy and Camden rented a boat and explored while Ailyn and I stayed on dry land. The boat was only allowed 3 people. :(  Keeping Ailyn entertained is not an easy task. Since she can't walk, I have to carry her everywhere. She will not crawl around on the ground.....do you blame her?? So we collected pine cones. Which only lasted 2.5 minutes before she decided that was not fun.

So she sat on the bench and complained in her "Ailyn language".  Poor baby didn't feel well. The Tylenol kept her fever down thank goodness.

Then it was time to fish! We found a perfect secluded spot. It was so peaceful. Other than it being very humid out, it was perfect. Daddy taught Camden to cast and he caught on right away. No fish were caught but it was good practice for our upcoming fishing trip.

Don't let this picture fool you, Ailyn didn't sit still for long. This game lasted 2.7 seconds before we had to move on to something else.

Camden has always enjoyed feeding the geese. It's so fun to watch him get all excited when one feeds out of his hands.

Today was a good day. A day that started out very boring turned into a nice relaxing day. Nugget is still feverish. Hopefully tomorrow she is feeling better.

Long overdue

I have been wanting to do an update on Ailyn for a very long time. This summer has been very busy for us. And, well....as you will hear, Ailyn is a very difficult child ;) Where do I even start??

I will start with her good news :) Ailyn is a very happy kid. Always in a great mood. She wants to be where the action is. Still very social and trying very hard to communicate with us. She loves animals and will hug them to death if she could. Her big brother is the funniest person in the world. Her Daddy is one of her favorite people. She loves her Mommy most since she knows all her signs and cries.

Ailyn LOVES her baby dolls. She has quads....4 tiny babies, just like her. She will crawl around with all 4 of them. She loves to wrap them up in blankets over and over.

But, Ailyn is a 2 year old.... and she is taking terrible 2's to another level. She doesn't have tantrums thank goodness because if so, I am not sure I would make it through the days. Ailyn is very physical. She is a strong kid! She will hit, pinch, bite, scratch or do anything that will get your attention. She will whip your glasses off your face so quick. I can not explain how very fast she is. You do not see the abuse coming. This is ALL day long. We are hoping this is happening because she has very few words and signs. She struggles with communication.

After our long trip "home" I decided Ailyn needs more help than just "time out" or the usual 2 year old "punishments".  Our service coordinator put in a request for a behavioral psychologist to come out for an evaluation. This won't happen right away. So her WONDERFUL AWESOME weekly teacher through Infant and Toddlers is coming an extra visit a week to work on behavior. It's only been two weeks but I can see a small change, very small. I am ready for a bigger change because this makes our days very long and very stressful.

Ailyn's gross motor is still very much delayed. She is not walking yet. If she doesn't realize you let go of her, she can stand on her own very well. She has no desire to walk with a walker or a push toy. We do make her walk with holding our hands. Her balance is way off. She struggles to pull herself up. We believe that it has a lot to do with her eye sight. Her eye doctor swears this is not the case (more on that later....) Climbing is getting easier for her. She is very strong, so I am sure once she figures it out, she will be running in no time. I look forward to her appointment with her developmental pediatrician on Monday.

Ailyn has therapy 5 days a week now! We are very busy with therapy and doctor appointments. She receives OT, PT, a teacher, vision, and a weekly playgroup through Infant and Toddlers. She will get speech starting in September/October.

We got bad news from the feeding clinic two weeks ago. Ailyn was supposed to start last week. The feeding clinic was an inpatient clinic at a local pediatric hospital. The program was everyday from 8am- 4pm for 6 weeks. Unfortunately, our insurance was not going to cover $17,000. So sadly we choose not to do the feeding clinic. Mainly because her GI doctor wasn't too concerned that she couldn't do the clinic. She says Ailyn will eat on her own time. Not sure how much we believe that but for now we have no choice.

Ailyn's AMAZING OT is going to work strictly on feeding once a week. And, I have to work on getting her to take at least 6-8 bites per meal.....not very easy. BUT, she is doing a lot better than she was a few months ago. She isn't gagging as much when she swallows. So there is hope she can do it on her own.

Her teacher also thinks she has some sensory processing issues as well. Her "gentle" touch is not very gentle. She loves to "squish" things in her hands. She can sit and "squish" a paper towel for a 1/2 hour. It's her security. Her teacher gave her a chewy tube and that has been great. She loves to chew on it. So whenever she bites us, we give that to her. We switched her toothbrush to an electric one and that has been great for her! She loves to brush her teeth now. She loves to hold the brush for a long time after. We are trying to supply her with sensory toys around the house to fulfill that need.

I was very excited to finally get a vision therapist come out to the house for an evaluation. She's great! Ailyn qualifies for 3 sessions a month. We are hoping she will help us with patching. Her eye doctor just increased her patch wearing to 3 hours a day. We are VERY lucky if we can get her to wear it for 2 minutes a day. The therapist also said she thinks we need to get a second opinion. Something we have wanted to do for a awhile now. We just needed that push. I was able to an appointment with a very good eye doctor for Monday, August 29th. The therapist is coming with us! I look forward to seeing what this doctor has to say.

Ailyn CAN see. She is a little bit far sighted which is normal for a child her age. Her eye still crosses, and her other eye will also cross at times. She can look strait at you. We believe she may see double. She rubs her eyes, and will blink often.

Ailyn is doing great gaining weight, thanks to the feeding tube! She gets fed 10 hours a night. She is able to drink 16 ounces of
Pediasure per day on her own by bottle. She hasn't been weighed in a few weeks but if I had to guess I would say she is close to 23 pounds.

But, BOY she HATES that tube! She will try to pull it out daily. And, we have to make sure she is sound asleep before we start her night feed. And, if she wakes up at night (which she does) she will pull out the tube.....and if I don't notice right away..... the bed gets fed..... and we get very wet. It's not very fun changing sheets at 3am.

Sleep..... comes hard for Ailyn. She can fall asleep very well. She loves to sleep. But, she is having a very hard time with waking and getting back to sleep. She wakes at 3am and will toss and turn for hours. If she sees light outside, forget it, she is up for the day. Ailyn has a very active brain.... always moving, I think that is a reason this is happening. I plan to bring it up Monday with her Dev. Ped.

So there you have it. Our life right now in a nut shell. If you talked to me about it a few weeks ago, I was ready to jump off a bridge or commit myself. Ailyn is a very challenging child. We have to be on top of her every second. She finds trouble everywhere she goes. She can be contained in her car seat and find something to get into to! I keep in mind that this stubbornness is why she is here with us today. I think I have finally (or on my way too....) accepting that this is what we were dealt. We can handle it. We have been through a hell of a lot worse! I am ready for this challenge.

THANK YOU for ALL my awesome friends out there who keep me sane! And, my new friends who "get it". I honestly couldn't do it without your support!

Our day with Roy

My biological father happened to be overnight in a nearby town where we are on vacation. He had a full day off, so we spent the day with him. We had lunch at really cute cafe and then headed over to a park. The weather was a perfect 78 degrees. Ailyn took a great nap in her stroller while we explored the park. At the end of the day, we got a tour of the bus. Which Camden will tell you was "very awesome". He plans on us buying one to travel to different states very soon. He is also very serious about becoming a rock star now since he can live on a bus.  The day was very relaxing..... a nice change to our crazy busy days here. Thank you Roy!
