Shark weeks

Ailyn hasn't taking much time off of school work since June. She insists on doing "homework" everyday..... sometimes at 8am. When I made the decision to homeschool I figured we would start working with a fun curriculum. I sat on Pinterest for hours pinning Shark units.

I didn't want a set schedule yet but I wanted to start recording hours we did work. I spent a weekend printing out a ton of work and games on sharks. I picked sharks because well.... Who doesn't like sharks? And, it's summer! Guess who doesn't like sharks? Ailyn. She just wasn't into learning about them. The best part about homeschool is I could change my plan and make it fun. Next time I will ask Ailyn what she wants to learn about. Although, there might not be much education in learning about Peppa Pig.

We watched a couple short clips on facts about sharks.

A loves math. I bought a pack of ocean animals to use as manipulatives. She wasn't thrilled. ( I know who I can pass these onto! Her old K teacher is doing a beach theme this year)

I try to have her write in a daily journal. It can be anything. A story, what she did that day or practice a letter she has trouble with.

These cubes are her favorite. We use them for a lot! We measured some sharks and did some addition with them.

Even though she wasn't into learning about sharks, she did learn some cool facts. She can even tell the difference between a few sharks.

I knew from her class last year that kids love to roll and count. We played this game many times over.

Cutting is one weakness A has. Her ataxia CP makes her very shaky. She tries very hard but still needs a lot of practice. I found a ton of fun cutting practice work on Pinterest.

She can kick butt in memory. She learned to say some shark names too. I think the best part about teaching her is that I can put speech and OT in most everything we do. We can take more time on a word and not have to move on. I think she appreciates that. She would tell me her classroom last year moved too fast.

I'm making "busy bags" for independent morning work. I laminated (so much fun) the sheets so she can use it over and over.

*** I did not make any of this curriculum. If you like any let me know and I can tell you where I got it***

We are still playing our shark games and using our fun shark book her 1st year K teacher brought over for us. But, we have moved on to another theme. Monarch butterflies! Ailyn is very into them and is loving raising some to release.

We will start our Calvert & Verticy curriculum very soon. I'm trying to get a few weeks ahead so I know what I'm doing. I have to keep Ailyn's attention or I lose her quick. I'm trying to figure out a set schedule but also trying to be relaxed. Pinterest has been my best friend. They have everything! And, a HUGE thank you to her old teachers for helping too.

Camden officially starts middle school tomorrow! He went for a half day orentation yesterday. He liked it. He had a lot to say about the Spanish class. He's always wanted to learn another Lauguage.

Come back soon to see our monarch unit!

What is Strawberry Academy

What is 🍓Strawberry Academy🍓, you ask?!
It's Ailyn's new school! After a very long year of deep thought I have decided to homeschool. It shouldn't be a huge surprise to most. I can even go back as far as 2 years old thinking putting Ailyn in school was not going to best for her. We are extremely fortunate to have a huge "Team Ailyn". Her therapists and (most) teachers have been a huge part of our life. When Ailyn was aging out of Infant and Toddlers at 3 years old, I hesitated sending her to school. Her OT and speech teachers talk me into it. Saying I would be surprised how well Ailyn would thrive. I met with the preschool teacher and decided I would give the school a chance. I  told the teacher I would be watching through the window daily. Her year went amazing (she did have her Bubba in class with her)

Then it was time to move onto Kindergarten. I planned on stalking the Kindergarten class to make sure I liked the program. Turns out I didn't have to. They welcomed me anytime I wanted to sit and watch. By the time I had to make my decision I knew I was more than ready for her to start Kindergarten. She was in a contained classroom and taken out for specials. She would go to a general Ed class for those specials. Art, music and gym. That part freaked me out. They took away her full time aide (I can go on a very long rant about that but I won't) so she would have to share an aide..... That part freaked me out even more than a general Ed class. But, I didn't have anything to worry about. Her aide ended up being more than perfect and the general Ed classmates were great with her.

When it came time to talk about the following school year I stressed out. Ailyn didn't qualify for special Ed anymore. Academically Ailyn was with her peers. Fuck. I was told this should make me happy. She would go onto her homeschool in a general Ed class ALL day long. Looking back I should have followed my amazing Mommy instinct (my best quality) and fight for Ailyn. But, our experience with her school had been amazing. Our homeschool is a brand new lighthouse. Camden thrived there.

I always knew Ailyn was going to repeat Kindergarten. It's something most micropreemies have to do. So she went onto her homeschool.

I don't have anything bad to say about the new school. The special Ed team was very good, very helpful. They put up with me being an over protective parent. (I'm sure I was more than annoying) But, from the very first day I knew I screwed Ailyn over. I let her down.

It was not the special Ed teams fault. (I blame the county but I will save that for another time) They tried the best they could with Ailyn. She decided from day one not to speak or smile at school. My master manipulator was fooling everyone. I can go into a lot more details but that wouldn't be fair to some.

After talking with Ailyn's doctor we decided that public school was not for Ailyn. We can't afford to hire a lawyer and advocate to get her into these amazing schools for kids like Ailyn. One school is over $90,000 😳 Others close to $40,000.
So we homeschool. Ailyn never stopped school since June. She demands to do school work 2 hours a day. We will be using the Calvert & Verticy curriculum. We have joined two homeschool co-ops. Our classroom is almost done. I will be updating this blog on our homeschooling fun.

If anyone wants to talk more about why I'm homeschooling, I would be more than happy to talk to you. I know a few have already reached out to me. I did what was best for my daughter. Ailyn is her own unique self.

Camden is going to Middle school. He shows no interest in homeschooling and I honestly think a public school is best for him right now.

Summer series #2

When people ask me how things are going I always say "crazy". I wish I had another answer but our life is insanely crazy with something always going on. Im just thankful we are all healthy.... No, that's cheesy. I'm just thankful I am not in a padded room.

Ailyn has been working very hard recovering from her surgery. We have had some issues come up and I will make a blog post when I know more. Right now we are doing home PT twice a week and walking as much she can.

Camden has been growing up fast over the summer. Not sure how it happened. I just notice he's a lot more mature, talks back way more and is being a good big brother to Ailyn.

Here's our summer in pics

Camden went to Apple camp to learn how to make iMovie. He really enjoyed it.

Working hard in the therapy pool

 Lots of sleepovers with Bubba

Making friends IN our house

Practicing walking

My BFF gave me a unicorn birthday party. After all, we are unicorns

Ailyn's homeschool speech teacher came to visit us. We miss her lots.

Ailyn still asks to do "homework" everyday. So we are learning about Sharks

And, growing up 😩

Finally went to our Amish market!

Stays up until 2am and sleeps until 12pm

I gave LuLu and Lily a bath

Aaron and I went on a date to a comedy show. Then the next day we had a much needed family day. Daddy has been working a lot so we don't get to see him much.

Our friends had a house fire so they have been living in a hotel. We go and swim

We had some our oldest Marylsnd friends come over. We haven't seen them in a long time!

Ailyn's first year K teacher still hangs out with us. We refuse to let her and her other teachers go.

Sometimes it's tough being 11. I had said "no" to driving around to find Pokemon in the rain.

But, the very next day we did!

And, watched a band play

These two and their Mommy have eaten my entire garden

Then there was the day that a-hole broke a vase Aaron and I have had for 20 years together.

Camden now has a new chore everyday. The dishwasher!

And, this cutie turns 4 this month 😢

We stole A's teacher again and took her shopping with us

These two never stop. Game after game.

This day Daddy stole all of Camden's money. He paid him back interest.

Her home PT is tough work

Ailyn's K teacher's daughter (not the teacher above) is good friends with Camden. She's been coming over to hang out. Of course we had to give her a party!

We went out for breakfast for K's birthday!

And, then went dancing that night

Dabbing is the thing to do

Had a cookout with our Maryland family.

Working hard on our shark unit

And, giving me attitude for not having her sheets cleaned and ready to put on the bed

I find him every morning in new spots around the house

We've been playing with our twin friends

Lots of Connor this summer

He's going to be a party animal in college

Had an appointment with her rehab Doctor.

Twinsies! We saw The Secret Life of Pets with our friends

We went to Rocky Point beach and felt very confident that the lifeguard was watching our children

More Shark stuff

Moms night out to see "Bad Moms" Super funny.

And, some drinks

Another summer concert

We got our hair done at the concert by Super Cuts

A storm rolled in quick and we had to leave. I didn't notice Camden dabbing until after I looked through my pictures 😒

Not sure if she's taking after Camden and sleeping on floors now or what. But, she flat out refused to sleep in a bed. Daddy woke up her up and brought her into bed a couple hours later. She told him today "Don't wake me up ever again"

Today was our friend Reid's birthday! Ailyn had so much fun at his party.

She made a new friend and bossed him around all day.

"Mommy, look I'm dabbing like Camden" 🙄

I figured I would give her a pillow and blanket to sleep with tonight. She never wants to sleep without me. She is normally on top of me the entire night. If I move, she moves with me. Once it's not hot in her room, she's sleeping ALONE  in there. Or, on the floor, I don't care

That felt good to catch up with our summer pics! I want to keep this blog updated now. I hate that I let it go for a couple years. I love looking back.
